During her acceptance speech at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Pop Vocal Album, Swift informed the audience she had been concealing a secret for quite some time and that she was ready to reveal, leading to the announcement of the album and its release date. Minutes later, she posted on Instagram, revealing the cover art accompanied by the message

On February 5, 2024, Swift revealed the album's track list and back cover via social medias. However, the title and tracklist were leaked on January 26 by a TikTok user, who has since deleted their account. Many fans believe this led Swift to announce the tracklist earlier than originally planned.
The back covers each feature a different phrase, being "I love you, it's ruining my life", "You don't get to tell me about sad", "Am I allowed to cry?", and "Old habits die screaming" These might be lyrics from the album.
On February 16, 2024 at The Eras Tour show in Melbourne, Australia, Swift announced a second version of the album featuring a new bonus track "The Bolter."
On February 23, 2024 at The Eras Tour show in Sydney, Australia, Swift announced a third version of the album featuring a new bonus track "The Albatross."
On March 3, 2024 at The Eras Tour show in Singapore, Swift announced the fourth and final version of the album featuring a new bonus track "The Black Dog."
